Before breakfast don't forget to SUCK ON A SPUD

First there was Spud on a date. Now we have Spud as soon as you awaken. Seriously? Do smokers do this? Do they really have a cigarette BEFORE getting out of bed? For those who like to "inhale before breakfast" and actually I thought we all did that every few seconds...

  1. hate to admit it...I'm a previous smoker..my husband also...never lit up in bed,but as soon as I got out(physically)...you betcha! My son has lit up before he gets up..not a good idea. Only a smoker or "reformed" smoker would get this!! Bad habit..glad I quit after 35 yrs of smoking, but , gosh..I sure miss it!!! Loved it!!
this is a great ad..never heard of this brand or company..maybe it was bought out by another company or the name just ended it!! Not shure I'd want to smoke a "spud" !!..funny name, isn't it.
    thanks for sharing this!!

  2. Spud has got to be the worst name for a cigarette - ever. Anyway, what is going on on the top of this guy's head; it looks like the Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai - but in black and white.

  3. Ann, if you click on the link in the first line you'll be taken to a previous Spud ad from 1934. I give a little bit of history about the company and the odd name. They were eventually bought by Phillip Morris.

And yes Christine, what a horrid name. Can you imagine the jokes that were told. What was this guy Spud thinking? I'm glad he wasn't named Harry. Harry cigarrettes!

  7. Named after Lloyd "Spud" Hughes of Mingo Junction, Ohio. I'm not kidding.

  8. I used to live in Idaho and ate Idaho Spuds (the candy bar.) I even visited there recently and tried one again. It's chocolate marshmallow dipped in chocolate and then rolled in coconut. They're not what you would call good. I once had some guests from Switzerland and I gave them a Spud to try; they spit it out. BUT, the packaging makes up for everything else.

  9. In other words it would be wiser to stick to the good old Luther Burbank russet baked with some butter.
