TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

If you're of a certain age this will most likely be the cover you remember when you first read To Kill a Mockingbird in school. This edition was published March 1962. There were only three books I remember not wanting to give back to the teacher when class discussions were through. "...Mockingbird was one of them.

I found this one in a used paperback book store probably about 25 years ago. I wanted it immediately, but even more so when I saw the inscription inside.

Did Greg Parks go on to become a writer? Second place out of 400 entries. An auspicious start. Or did he never "publish" again like Harper Lee?

  1. In August of last year, the New Yorker published an article entitled: The Courthouse Ring: Atticus Finch and the limits of Southern Liberalism. It gave me a new and somewhat unwelcome perspective on the book.

  2. This is a book I do not remember reading - at all. I don't know why.

  3. I read the New Yorker piece. Me thinks the writer protest too much. I think they're taking a book written by a woman whose father was devastated by a similar trial and rewriting their Cliff Notes to match how they believed the world should be in Harper Lee's world. Sort of pointless.

  4. You had me at To Kill......

This book has always topped, and always will top, my favorite books list. And the movie ranks #1 as well. Have you watched 'Capote'? I loved Catherine Keener's portrayal of Nell Harper Lee and how the release of the book was interwoven into the story of Capote's researching and writing of In Cold Blood. I think he was a little jealous of her.

Last weekend, in Alabama, they were holding continuous readings to celebrate the 50th anniversary.

  5. Susan, yes I loved the Capote movie. And the friendship between Lee and Capote was interesting. I think Capote was jealous of everyone in his life. He had the Napoleon short man complex.

I decided since I haven't read Mockingbird in so long I'll start it again tonight. A good summer read.
