DOLLS OF MANY LANDS greeting cards

Every once in a while my best friend puts together a fun box that she ships to me. I never know what will be inside. This past week I received such a box and I have gone through it layer by layer, taking my time, a little bit each day. She said I was treating it like an archaeological dig. That describes it perfectly. It has wonderful items, many of which I will share. The first is below.

Dolls of Many Lands greeting cards made by Tichnor Brothers of Boston were a gift to my friend from her grandparents when she was little. They are lovely and remind me a bit of the Hallmark cards that are so popular to collect. Over the next few posts I will feature the cards.

Sadly I cannot find any information about who illustrated these cards.

Just a mysterious old envelope mailed from Tacoma, Washington on November 20, 1939. I wonder what was so important as to need being registered? The envelope is empty. It's a lovely old piece of paper.

What an odd post card to send from Nebraska. And what was the relationship between Mrs. Miller and Mr. Griffin so far apart. We could easily spin a story.

Greetings from 1944 TAMPA, FLORIDA

It's May, 1944, and you're "stuck" in Tampa with a guy named Bill. Something is a mess, but I'm not sure what. The hotel? The town? The room? You figure it out and get back to me.

The word "Tampa" may mean "sticks of fire" in the language of the Calusa, a Native American tribe that once lived south of today’s Tampa Bay. This might be a reference to the many lightning strikes that the area receives during the summer months. Other historians claim the name means "the place to gather sticks". (SOURCE: Wikipedia)

The word "Bill" means:

1. an amount of money owed for goods supplied or services rendered, set out in a printed or written statement of charges : he was running up a bill of hundreds of dollars | the bill for their meal came to $17.
2. a draft of a proposed law presented to parliament for discussion : a debate over the civil rights bill.
3. a program of entertainment, esp. at a theater : she was top of the bill at America's leading vaudeville house.
4. a banknote; a piece of paper money : a ten-dollar bill.
5. a poster or handbill : the circus promoters were posting bills all over town.
