I, too, was a child of the 60s ... and reading your wonderfully nostalgic recollections of family vacation road trips and staying overnight at a "Sleepy Bear" TraveLodge wherever we could find one ... was so much like our summer roadtrip vacations that it was as if describing our own! We travelled from our home in Brenham, Texas westward through states like Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California. And just like you .... we frequently could not afford to stay at the "pricey" Holiday Inns, which cost an average of $28 per night. As I recall .... TraveLodge usually ran ten dollars less than that. Thanks for including the 'Sleepy Bear' logo. This has brought back fond memories for me! Now all I need to complete this "picture" is to go back online and do an internet search on 'Stuckey's' (the roadside fast-food/giftshop rest-stops) where we always stopped to stretch our legs and to grab a quick hamburger/fries lunch! Oh, I rushed home every day from school to watch this show! My friends and I could not wait to see what happened next to Barnabas, Maggie, Quentin and Angelique. As far as the movie remake, I understand that Jonathan Frid actually had a small cameo part in the upcoming movie and was quite pleased with it and with Johnny Depp's part as Barnabas. I was at first quite put out with the remake (not being a Depp fan), but the more I think about it, it sounds quite campy and fun and will be a great tribute. Thanks for your wonderful post, it brings back great memories!

Yup, same jam. It used to be when you went in for the chicken dinner you got hot biscuits and a big pot of jam to slather on the biscuits. That was truly the best part of the meal, though the rhubarb was also a huge treat. Somewhere along the line they took the pot of jam off the table and just gave the crummy little plastic thingies you find in coffee shops. I think they were losing a mint in jam at those chicken dinners.

I was an easily frightened child with a very vivid imagination. I don't even want to tell you what the story "Peter and the Wolf" did to me.

Oh yes, the panning for gold! And the wonderful building that was full of doll houses. One little house even had a tiny working tv.

We went to Knott's Berry Farm in 1978 as part of our honeymoon trip to CA. I barely remember it though. I do remember that most of the rides in Disneyland were closed down for refurbishing. I guess that is what happens when you get married in January.

Cloverine Salve is still being made but by another company in Dobbs Ferry NY.
I have one of those .22 rifles but I did not get it from selling the Salve, I did sell Cloverine back in 1947-48 but when I ran out of relatives my selling days were over. I bought the .22 rifle three years ago for $10.
It was made in Plymouth Michigan,(where I was born) and when I did the research on that little gun I found out that one of it's customers was the Williams Chemical Co. RPH

You're right, we have neglected education. How can people in this country understand what is going on when they don't even know where other countries are? For that matter, when I was at the bank prior to a trip a few weeks ago, a bank employee was going to show me how I could find ATM locations in Illinois and Wisconsin. He had to click on a map of the US, but he had absolutely no idea where Illinois or Wisconsin were. He finally guessed and clicked on Colorado. I wonder if he knows where Europe is...the Middle East?
